Compare the complete fare, not the smallest headline

Air India Basic starts stronger for a domestic traveller with one checked bag. IndiGo Lite can start lower for a traveller using only one compliant cabin bag. Neither is always cheaper: compare the same flight need after baggage, seats, meals, fees and flexibility.

Air India Basic includes 15 kg checked baggage and 7 kg cabin baggage on select domestic routes. IndiGo Lite includes one cabin bag up to 7 kg and no free checked baggage on eligible direct domestic and international flights. Check current Air India coupons and flight offers and IndiGo coupons and flight offers, but use the airlines' completed carts as evidence for the final comparison.

Prices change by route, date, demand and booking stage. This guide therefore compares official inclusions and gives a reproducible cart method instead of claiming one universal winner.

Air India's 16 June 2026 announcement describes Basic as an optional economy fare and says Value, Classic and Flex remain available. IndiGo describes Lite as its lowest-priced economy fare. Both products have direct-channel restrictions, so a travel portal may show the same flight without showing the same fare family.

Let luggage decide the honest starting price

Air India Basic is easier to evaluate for a typical domestic trip with one checked suitcase because 15 kg is already included. Confirm that Basic appears on your route and that the bag stays within the current weight and piece rules.

IndiGo Lite is built for a traveller who can complete the journey with one cabin bag. IndiGo publishes a 7 kg limit and dimensions of 55 x 35 x 25 cm. If you need checked baggage, add it before comparing. Arriving at the airport with an undeclared checked or oversized cabin bag can trigger the applicable airport charge and, under IndiGo's terms, failure to pay can mean you are not permitted to board.

Baggage decision path from cabin-only travel to checked-bag fare comparison

Pack in principle before searching: your real bag decides which price comparison is honest.

Include a laptop, chargers, footwear, medicines and anything you may bring back. A cabin-only fare can lose its advantage when the return bag is heavier than the outbound bag. CouponPe's IndiGo Lite baggage guide explains the eligibility and luggage restrictions in more detail.

Add only the services you will use

Air India Basic excludes a complimentary meal but includes tea or coffee. IndiGo Lite excludes meals and preferred seats, while an auto-assigned seat is free. For a family, multiply every per-passenger, per-sector add-on. A ₹300 seat choice across two people and two sectors is ₹1,200, not ₹300.

Also compare change and cancellation deductions for the same level of uncertainty. A smaller initial fare difference may not matter if one option better fits a possible date change. Record the payment-page total because booking or convenience fees can alter the result.

Use the BAG-FLEX cart check

CouponPe's BAG-FLEX worksheet is a calculation method, not a live-fare claim:

  1. B for bags: add baggage not already included.
  2. A for assigned seat and add-ons: include seats, meals or priority only when useful.
  3. G for gateway fees: record the payment-page booking or convenience fee.
  4. F for flexibility: compare change and cancellation deductions.
  5. L for location and timing: account for the airport, departure time and any hotel or transfer.
  6. E for every sector: multiply passenger and sector charges correctly.
  7. X for checkout total: subtract only an eligible instant discount; keep later cashback separate.

Reproducible same-trip example

Suppose Air India Basic shows ₹5,850 and IndiGo Lite shows ₹5,050 for timings you consider equivalent. You need one 15 kg checked bag. If IndiGo shows ₹1,200 to add that bag and both payment-page totals already include fees, the comparable costs are ₹5,850 and ₹6,250. Basic is ₹400 lower in this illustration. With cabin baggage only, Lite is ₹800 lower.

These are labelled sample inputs, not current fares. Replace every value with the two completed carts for the same passenger count, date and direction. CouponPe's sale, coupon and bank-offer guide explains why later cashback should not be treated as an instant reduction.

Direct airline checkout versus a travel portal

Compare Basic and Lite on the airlines' own channels first because both have channel restrictions. A portal can still help discover flights, but its price is not an Air India Basic or IndiGo Lite price unless the fare family and inclusions genuinely match. Current MakeMyTrip coupons and flight offers, Cleartrip coupons and booking offers or Goibibo coupon options may change another available fare's payable amount.

Build the final price from visible checkout lines; treat later cashback separately.

When the named fare is missing, compare the available bundle honestly. Before paying, confirm passenger names, route, date, airport, baggage, fare family, refund amount and support path. DGCA guidance says cancellation charges should be displayed prominently and the admissible refund stated clearly.

When neither stripped-back fare is right

Compare a more flexible fare when your dates may change, a family needs paid seats across several sectors, or a checked-bag add-on erases the headline saving. Reject a cheaper option when it uses the wrong airport or a timing that creates a hotel or expensive transfer. Basic and Lite describe bundles, not the quality of the trip.

How CouponPe checked these fares

CouponPe rechecked Air India's Basic launch terms, IndiGo's Lite terms and fees page, and DGCA's refund guidance on 22 July 2026. We compared published inclusions and built a labelled hypothetical cart. We did not book either fare, inspect a reader's checkout, weigh a bag or measure an airline outcome. Basic remains described by Air India as a select-route pilot. Routes, fares, add-on prices, fees and conditions can change, so the two completed payment-page totals are the final inputs.

The fare verdict by baggage

Start with Air India Basic when the offered domestic flight suits you and you need the included checked bag. Start with IndiGo Lite when an eligible direct flight suits you, one compliant cabin bag is enough and an auto-assigned seat is acceptable. Then apply BAG-FLEX to the completed carts and choose the lower total that still covers the trip you will actually take.
