Compare the complete fare, not the smallest headline
Air India Basic and IndiGo Lite are both unbundled economy options, but they start from different places. Air India Basic includes 15 kg checked baggage and 7 kg cabin baggage on select domestic routes. IndiGo Lite includes one cabin bag up to 7 kg and no free checked baggage on eligible non-stop domestic and international routes. Before booking, check the current Air India coupons and flight offers and IndiGo coupons and flight offers, then compare the final payable total after baggage and other useful add-ons.
That difference means the lower headline fare is not automatically the cheaper trip. A traveller with a checked suitcase should add IndiGo's current baggage price before comparing. A cabin-only traveller should still compare the actual flight time, airport, seat need, meal choice, convenience fee and cancellation terms shown at checkout.
Neither airline publishes one universal saving for these fares. Prices change by route, date, demand and booking stage, so this guide compares inclusions and gives you a reproducible final-cost method instead of claiming that one airline is always cheaper.
Air India Basic and IndiGo Lite compared
| Check | Air India Basic | IndiGo Lite |
|---|---|---|
| Where it applies | Trialled on select domestic routes | Eligible non-stop domestic and international routes, subject to exclusions |
| Cabin baggage | 7 kg | One cabin bag up to 7 kg and 55 x 35 x 25 cm |
| Checked baggage | 15 kg included | Not included; eligible baggage can be purchased separately |
| Meal | Complimentary meal not included; tea or coffee beverage service included | Meal not included; pre-book or buy on board where available |
| Seat | Check the seat choice shown for the fare and flight | Auto-assigned seat is free; a preferred eligible seat costs extra |
| Flexibility | Compare Basic terms with Value, Classic and Flex at checkout | Standard change and cancellation charges apply |
| Important limit | Availability is limited to selected routes during the trial | Direct non-stop bookings only; exclusions include connections and some special categories |
Air India's 16 June 2026 announcement describes Basic as an optional domestic economy fare. The airline continues to sell Value, Classic and Flex, which bundle progressively more benefits. IndiGo describes Lite as its lowest-priced economy fare and says the original Lite baggage allowance continues even if a traveller later buys an upgrade available at the airport or on board.

Market share shows scale, not the better fare
A March 2026 Rajya Sabha answer from the Ministry of Civil Aviation reported January 2026 domestic passenger market share of 63.6% for IndiGo and 26.5% for the Air India group. The remaining scheduled airlines together accounted for 9.9%. The answer attributes the figures to DGCA data.
| Airline grouping | January 2026 domestic passenger share | What the number tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|---|
| IndiGo | 63.6% | It carried the largest share of scheduled domestic passengers in that month | It does not prove that Lite is cheaper for your route |
| Air India group | 26.5% | It was the second-largest grouping in the cited month | It does not prove that Basic has better timings or service for every traveller |
| Other scheduled airlines | 9.9% combined | The rest of the market was spread across other operators | It is not one airline or one comparable fare |

Market share is useful context for network scale and how many passengers chose an airline in one period. It is not a quality score, customer-satisfaction rating or fare comparison. A smaller airline can still have the better flight time or final price on a specific route.
Choose by luggage before looking at the discount
Air India Basic is easier to evaluate for a typical domestic trip with one checked suitcase because 15 kg is already included. That does not make it the cheapest flight overall, but it removes one large add-on from the calculation. Check that the route is one where Basic is offered and that your bag stays within the current weight and piece rules.
IndiGo Lite is designed for a traveller who can complete the journey with one cabin bag. IndiGo says the bag can weigh up to 7 kg and must stay within the published dimensions. If you need checked baggage, price it before payment. Do not wait until the airport and assume the difference will remain small.

Pack in principle before searching: your real bag decides which price comparison is honest.
Include a laptop, chargers, footwear, medicines and anything you may bring back. A cabin-only fare can lose its advantage when the return bag is heavier than the outbound bag. CouponPe's existing IndiGo Lite baggage guide explains the fare's route and luggage restrictions in more detail.
Add seats, meals and payment fees only when you need them
Both fares remove some items that travellers may be used to seeing in a bundle. Air India Basic excludes a complimentary meal but includes tea or coffee beverage service according to the launch announcement. IndiGo Lite excludes meals and preferred seat selection; a seat is auto-assigned without charge, while eligible preferred seats can be bought separately.
For a solo one-hour trip, paying for a seat or meal may add little value. For a family, sitting together may matter enough to price seat selection for every passenger and sector. For a return journey, multiply per-sector add-ons correctly. A ā¹300 choice on four passenger-sectors is ā¹1,200, not ā¹300.
Also carry the comparison through to the payment page. IndiGo says its convenience fee is shown in the fare breakdown and can vary with factors such as fare and journey type. A portal may show its own disclosed service charge or a bank offer. Record the final payable total rather than the search-result price.
Use the BAG-FLEX final-cost check
CouponPe's BAG-FLEX check is a simple worksheet for comparing unbundled fares. It is a calculation method, not a claim that every item will apply.
- B for bags: add cabin or checked baggage that is not already included.
- A for assigned seat and add-ons: include a preferred seat, meal or priority service only when you will use it.
- G for gateway fees: note the convenience or booking fee visible before payment.
- F for flexibility: compare change and cancellation deductions for the same level of uncertainty.
- L for location and timing: value the correct airport, departure time and any overnight travel realistically.
- E for extras on every sector: multiply per-passenger, per-sector costs across the whole booking.
- X for checkout total: subtract only an eligible instant discount; keep later cashback separate until it is actually received.
Write both checkout totals beside the inclusions. Do not compare one headline fare with the other option's completed cart.
The broader sale, coupon and bank-offer final-price method uses the same discipline for shopping. If a flight payment is debited but no confirmed ticket arrives, save the payment reference and booking screen, then follow the payment-debited, order-failed evidence checklist.
Direct airline checkout versus a travel portal
First compare the airlines directly so the fare family and included services are clear. Then check a trusted portal only when it shows the same flight, passenger count and comparable conditions. Current MakeMyTrip coupons and flight offers, Cleartrip coupons and booking offers or Goibibo coupon options may change the payable amount, but the offer should not hide a stricter fare or an extra service fee.

Build the final price from visible checkout lines; treat later cashback separately from an instant discount.
IndiGo Lite has channel and itinerary restrictions, so a portal may not sell the identical Lite product. Air India Basic is also being trialled only on select domestic routes. When the fare family is missing, do not label a different product as an exact price match. Compare the available bundle honestly and keep cashback separate from an immediate discount.
Before paying, confirm the passenger names, route, date, airport, baggage, fare family, refund amount and support path. DGCA guidance says cancellation charges should be displayed prominently and the admissible refund should be stated clearly. A direct-airline booking can also have different correction or support rules from an agent booking.
Which fare fits which traveller?
| Traveller scenario | Best starting point | Why | Recheck before payment |
|---|---|---|---|
| One compliant cabin bag, eligible non-stop route | IndiGo Lite | You are not paying inside the fare for a checked bag you do not plan to use | Final fee, flight timing and return-trip bag |
| Domestic trip with a checked suitcase | Air India Basic | The published bundle already includes 15 kg checked baggage | Route availability and the Basic checkout total |
| Family that wants seats together | Compare completed carts | Per-passenger, per-sector seat charges can change the winner | Seat map, passenger count and every sector |
| Trip dates may change | Compare a more flexible fare too | A lower entry fare can be poor value when change or cancellation risk is real | Current deductions and fare difference |
Consider Air India Basic when the offered flight suits your schedule, you need up to the included checked-baggage allowance, and you do not need a bundled meal. Compare it with Air India's other fare families if flexibility or included services matter.
Consider IndiGo Lite when the eligible non-stop flight suits you, one compliant cabin bag is enough, and you can accept an auto-assigned seat. Add checked baggage before comparing if there is any realistic chance you will carry it.
Choose neither by label alone when another standard fare has a better time, airport, cancellation rule or completed price. The word Basic or Lite describes a bundle, not the quality of the decision.
The fare verdict by baggage
Air India Basic has the stronger starting bundle for a domestic traveller carrying a checked bag. IndiGo Lite is the more stripped-back option for an eligible non-stop journey with one cabin bag. Neither is always cheaper. Compare the same trip need, complete every useful add-on, read the current fare conditions and choose the lowest final total that still covers how you will actually travel.
