The rollout that started on 16 July
Amazon began the phased unification of Prime Video and MX Player in India on 16 July 2026. This is an active product rollout, not a new subscription plan or a one-day promotion. The immediate change is that free, ad-supported MX Player programming and paid Prime Video programming are beginning to sit inside one broader viewing destination.
The change affects three groups differently: people who watch free MX Player content, Prime members, and people who use the standalone MX Player app across phones, televisions, web browsers and iPhones. Amazon says the migration will expand across devices over the coming weeks, so two viewers may not see the same screen on the same day.
For shoppers comparing the wider membership bundle, CouponPe's Amazon Prime plan guide for India explains the shopping-only, Lite and full Prime choices. Current Amazon coupons and store offers and Amazon Prime coupons and membership offers remain separate from this streaming interface change; a coupon listing does not alter the content or device access shown in an Amazon account.
What each type of viewer gets
| Viewer | Confirmed change | What does not follow from the announcement |
|---|---|---|
| Non-Prime viewer | A Free to Me area in Prime Video for free, ad-supported content, without a required sign-up for that viewing route | Free content does not make the paid Prime catalogue free |
| Prime member | MX Originals, dubbed international shows and other free programming join the wider Prime Video experience | Rentals and 30-plus add-on subscriptions do not become part of the base membership |
| MX Player Android user | The app receives the MX Player by Prime Video identity and an upgraded video area | Amazon did not say every Android user will see every change simultaneously |
| MX Player user on TV, web or iOS | Amazon says these users will be redirected to Prime Video apps over the coming weeks | The announcement gives no single completion date for every device |
The clearest consumer benefit is reduced switching between separate destinations. A non-Prime viewer can browse a dedicated free section, while a Prime member can discover both included Prime programming and ad-supported programming in the same environment. The important boundary remains visible: free with ads, included with Prime, rented titles and separately purchased channel subscriptions are different access models.

The rollout changes where content is found. It does not make every title part of one price.
Your history is meant to move with you
Amazon says existing viewing history, preferences, watchlists and favourites will be preserved and transferred as users move from MX Player to Prime Video applications. That is a useful commitment, but the migration is phased. Before an app redirect, note any title you are actively watching and confirm that you are using the expected account or profile.
If a watchlist appears incomplete after the move, avoid immediately rebuilding or deleting it. First update the official app, check the signed-in account, restart the app and allow the rollout to settle. Then use the service's official support route with the device type, app version and approximate migration time. CouponPe has not tested the account migration, so this article does not claim that every history has already transferred successfully.
The standalone MX Player product also has a local-media-player history. Amazon's announcement concerns the streaming experience and app migration described in its notice. It should not be read as a promise about every unrelated playback feature or every file stored on a device.
Free, included and separately paid still mean different things
One destination can make discovery easier, but it can also put several payment models beside each other. Check the label on a title before pressing play or approving a purchase:
- Free with ads means no Prime membership is required for that title, but advertising can appear.
- Included with Prime means access depends on an eligible active membership and the current catalogue.
- Rent or buy is a separate transaction for a particular title.
- Add-on subscription is a separate recurring plan for a channel available through Prime Video.
Do not assume a title is included because it appears in the same search result or app. Read the button and final payment screen. The JioHotstar plan comparison uses the same access-first method: decide which screens, content and ad treatment you need before choosing a billing period. The Netflix plans guide is another useful comparison when simultaneous screens and picture quality matter more than shopping benefits.

Read the access label before watching or paying, even when all options appear in one app.
A safe check before the app redirects
Use the official Prime Video or MX Player app-store listing and ignore messages that ask you to install an unknown replacement file. A genuine service migration should not require sharing an OTP, UPI PIN or card PIN with a caller. Amazon says redirects will happen across supported device routes; it does not instruct viewers to pay an agent to preserve a watchlist.
Before the redirect reaches your device:
- note the account and profile you normally use;
- save the names of unfinished programmes if they matter to you;
- review active Prime, rental and add-on subscription charges separately;
- update through the device's official app store;
- check the access label again before approving any new payment.
If money is debited but access does not appear, keep the transaction reference and the payment screen. CouponPe's payment-debited, order-failed checklist explains how to preserve evidence before contacting the merchant or payment provider.
The practical result for Indian viewers
The 16 July rollout makes Prime Video the broader destination for Amazon's free and paid streaming choices in India. Non-Prime users gain a free-content route, Prime members gain additional discovery within the same experience, and MX Player users will move across devices in phases. The useful action is not to buy a new plan automatically. Wait for the official update, confirm that history and lists have moved, and read whether each title is free, included, rented or tied to an add-on subscription.
